However, there remains a single issue: The author likewise desires to be the Haims' newest recruit. And we're far from alone. Several famous fans have publicly begged for the role.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their career doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the most iconic ensembles, they're a inseparable trio. Their videos repeatedly show them marching in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such boundless happiness you can't help but think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans told us and said, 'After your show, I got a bass'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the greatest honour. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate young girls to make music."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the next Haim sister."

Historic Nod

The band have called into their homes, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in the running for the award.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the honor resonates with the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant achievement," continues Alana. "However we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The project came out of a period of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that unique liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The words follow breakups and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them working out in the moment who they want to be.

"I love description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to consciously practice blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That recent resilience called for a fresh approach – more organic and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The trio's candor fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal misadventures.

One man left Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Future

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an international following.

Yet Haim will always be their primary priority.

"We have been playing music since I was little," concludes Alana. "There is nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
