New research indicates that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing these treatments must be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs report a intense return of hunger.
"It was like something flipping and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
