The McLaren driver narrowly beat fellow driver and title rival Oscar Piastri for the quickest lap in the final moments of the practice session at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The British racer, who seized the title advantage from Piastri by a single point after taking the win in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, topped the Melbourne-born driver by a mere 0.023s. Before then, Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver for most of the session before the sprint shootout due at 18:30 GMT. The Red Bull star, the other racer in the points battle, trailing 36 points behind Norris, ended up in 17th place as his Red Bull team followed a unique setup. Verstappen's team-mate the Japanese driver was the only driver to go off, though minor, when he lost control at the fourth corner soon after starting. The Japanese slid over the curbs on exit before rotating through the gravel trap, and was blessed to avoid just a light touch of the barrier. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also lost it, at the conclusion of the session, turning around through the quick descending Mergulho turn leading to the final corner on to the main straight. The seven-time champion ended the session in 19th place, one place behind teammate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren pair were well clear of the rest of the field, with the German's car P3, over half a second behind Piastri's pace. The Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso was fourth fastest, with Sauber's Bortoleto in front of Mercedes' George Russell and Alpine's Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
