Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The court filing underscores that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative US President Trump, prompting him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will experience a custody hearing on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he required frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.
