In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
