Pick of the Week

This Satirical Thriller

Coralie Fargeat's bold commentary addresses the demanding standards for women's appearance along with the feared consequences of advancing years. The veteran actress offers a brilliant performance as Elisabeth, an aging film star forced into starring in a workout series on television. Pushed out thanks to her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she seeks out an enigmatic and horrifying process titled "The Substance". This creates a new version of herself called Sue, resulting in an increasingly toxic connection between them. October 17th, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10

This suspenseful story stars Keira Knightley playing Laura, a skilled journalist who opts for some time off from writing about world issues to embark on a luxury cruise accompanied by an ailing wealthy inheritor and donor, her husband, and other extremely wealthy guests. But after an unknown lady falls into the sea overnight and the entire crew insists she wasn't real, her journalistic curiosity take over. Available now, the Netflix platform

This Supernatural Story

Soderbergh challenges his creative boundaries in this innovative supernatural story captured wholly through the eyes of the spirit. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the camera – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of aware of the supernatural presence, and it seems defensive toward her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that doesn't outstay its welcome, including a revelation that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, the Sky channel

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Nicolas Cage fully commits to his unique fame through this meta comedy caper. He plays an egotistical Hollywood actor called Nicolas Cage who accepts a $1m payday to visit a birthday party on the Spanish island for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Hired by the CIA to spy on the alleged criminal, his unconventional method proves useful. October 11th, evening, on Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

Derrickson's locked-room horror stands strong even without a continuation. Set in 1970s Colorado, a series of child abductions has left the local kids anxious. When Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and locked up in a cellar, he dreads a terrible outcome. Yet the non-functional line in the room continues to ring, with spooky callers offering help, while the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen could save him. An effective horror. October 11th, late evening, the Film4 channel

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the conflict between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for materialism in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish biopic regarding the shamed televangelist and her criminal husband. Garfield acts as the greedy Jim, who proclaims initially, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye commence profiting from the people's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of poor styling, overdone appearance and insincerity, however Jessica Chastain succeeds to depict the character as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, late night, on Film4

The Spy Mystery

This period's another release from the filmmaker presents a spy mystery as tight similar to the collars used by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. His assignment is to discover a mole inside the organization out of five possibilities – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors are masters of calm composure, resulting in an engaging psychological game of deception or honesty unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the intelligent intelligence fun. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
